When preparing a home for sale, one of the simplest—and often most impactful—updates you can make is a fresh coat of paint. It makes a home feel new! And while white may sound like the easiest paint color to choose, there are hundreds of shades of white. Some are warm, some are cool, some have gray undertones, and others can appear creamy or crisp depending on the natural light in a room.

For homeowners preparing to sell on Chicago's North Shore, the goal isn't necessarily to choose the "whitest" white. The goal is to create a backdrop that feels fresh, bright, timeless and move-in ready , while allowing the architecture, furnishings and natural light to take center stage.

4. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008

Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008 is another strong option for staging. Sherwin-Williams describes Alabaster as a soft, warm but balanced white that provides brightness without sacrificing warmth. For staging, however, we would generally be cautious about using an extremely bright white throughout an older or traditionally styled home. Sometimes a slightly softer white will photograph and live better with existing architectural details.

Warm White vs. Cool White: Which Is Better for Selling?

This is where choosing paint for staging becomes more complicated!

Warm whites tend to have undertones of yellow, beige, red or orange. They can make a home feel welcoming and can work beautifully with:

Cool whites can have gray, blue, green or violet undertones. They can feel especially clean and sophisticated with:

A north-facing room may make a white appear cooler, while southern exposure can make the same color feel warmer. Flooring, countertops, cabinetry and even neighboring paint colors can also influence how white appears. Before painting an entire home, test large samples on the walls—or on large sample boards—and look at them in the morning, afternoon and evening.
